“STEAM is the solution to major challenges we face today in sustainability, security, economic opportunities, medicine, creative industries… It is the education which will enable this generation to turn the world into a better place”, said Manal Hakim, Geek Express CEO.
A mother of two boys, who like all other kids, play video games and use their phones regularly. She realized that technology was taking a big part in their lives and wanted to find a solution that would turn them into active creators of technology, rather than passive consumers, so that they can contribute and fit in a world that relies on tech literacy.
That’s when Geek Express came to life in 2017, the go-to-place for coding and robotics design workshops for kids in Lebanon. Since day one, Manal worked with on vision: to make STEAM accessible to all by offering a comprehensive platform: academy experience, after school activities, online live courses and an at-home steam kit: the MakerBox.
IM Capital along with the Seeders – LWAF angel investors network believed in the importance of STEAM education, so they have invested around $340K in Geek Express in April 2019.
To date, Geek Express has engaged more than 2000 students aged 5 to 17 across the MENA region, franchised in Qatar, its MakerBox is exported to the region, and developed its first Arabized STEAM subscription box. Geek Express also sponsored regional competitions & won the MIT app inventor Hackathon in 2019 with a Lebanese Team.
Manal always encourages other women entrepreneurs to follow their dreams by affirming that the ideas you fear the most can be your greatest. Address them, pursue them and everyday will feel like a win!
